As Time Draws Near (Various Artists)

An auster and dialed compilation of 1920s and 1930s ballads. All plaintive solo vocals accompanied by the banjo. No dance songs. Instead you get intense very American tunes about existential angst, murder, love, mystical happenings and so on. The mana. As far as we know, this is the first record to compile purely hard hitting banjo ballads from the golden 78 era. A treasure.
