Set in 1962, the film follows Frank Anthony “Tony Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), a Bronx club bouncer who is between gigs when he takes a job as chauffeur for Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a celebrated African-American classical and jazz pianist. As they travel together on Don’s concert tour of the Deep South, they encounter the pervasive Jim Crow attitudes of the era. What begins as a professional arrangement evolves into an improbable but deeply moving friendship, capturing both the challenges and the humanity of the time.
